Why I Attend IBS?
Right now I want to learn about solar energy products. In Louisiana (where I live and work) there are huge tax advantages for incorporating solar products into homes, including tax credits that can cover 80% of the products’ cost.
How I Got My Start?
I’m a third-generation builder. My grandfather began taking me to work with him when I was two years old. In fact, he’d take me to job sites all over the country. I’ve been in the business myself for over 38 years as a master carpenter, manager and consultant.
Most Important Industry Mentor?
My dad and one of his carpenters taught me most of what I know today about construction. My dad taught me the business, but I also went to college and got a degree in construction engineering.
How I’m Expanding My Business?
About 20 percent of my business is in forensic construction consulting and dispute resolution — an area that I think I can grow. Buyers and sellers of homes and contractors come to us with construction-related problems. We analyze and identify the problem, then explain how to fix it. Sometimes we’ll make the repair ourselves, but 75% of the time I end up testifying as an expert witness in court.
My Life Outside Work?
We have a second home in Arkansas near a small mountain. My family spends a few days every month there collecting our sanity. I like to travel, hike and take pictures. I’m even building a room to display my photos.

Why I Attend IBS?
There is always something new to learn at IBS. I don’t think I’ve missed a show since I first attended back in 1995. I’ve been on the Board since 2000 and I’m active in the Remodelors Council - I’m the current NAHBR vice chair. It’s always a satisfying experience.
How I Got My Start?
I’ve been building homes for 36 years. I grew up on a ranch and farm where we built everything we needed. In 1974, I needed a home to live in so I decided to build a house. I just dove in and learned a lot along the way. Then 20 years ago I started my current company, Associates In Building & Design.
Best Business Advice I’ve Received?
A gentleman I worked for back in the early 1980s told me you will never get more than you give back. I’ve taken that advice to heart ever since.
My Life Outside Work?
I spend much of my free time bicycling. This past weekend, for example, I rode over 150 miles. Because I live in Colorado, I have great cycling options: I can ride in the flats and foothills where I live or I can head up into the mountains - which I actually prefer. In the Rocky Mountains I own a cabin, where I’m always working on one project or another. I have seven grandchildren, ages 7 to 15, all of whom are active in sports. I also like to travel and play golf.

Why I Attend IBS?
I’ve been attending since the early 1990s. At IBS I get exposed to the newest products, and get to renew relationships with manufacturers and industry friends from around the country. If builders and remodelers are going to attend just one meeting, it’s going to be this one.
How I Got My Start?
In 1971, my first husband and I began building speculative houses, and eventually, I had to choose between doing the work myself and managing. I chose management, which worked out for me because I was also raising two daughters. My second husband was a carpenter, and when he offered me the position of president, I accepted. My husband is still one of my carpenters, and he expertly manages all aspects of production.
Most Important Industry Mentors?
My original landlord and a group of contractor friends taught me about building. Later, I learned the business side of construction from NAHB, especially how to price remodeling projects to make a profit.
Dealing With a Challenging Economy?
The economy has been tough. Today, we’ve streamlined our business — which is a nice way to say we’ve downsized. I’ve been calling our past clients, and the effort is starting to pay off with some repeat business.
My Life Outside Work?
I’ve been active in the Bellevue and Sammamish Chambers of Commerce, mostly getting people interested in education. I also have a 5-year-old house I built in Florida. I’m proud to say it’s the number 8 LEED platform house in the country!
